Entomologist Morgane explores methods of hibernation and migration. We first look at the Woolly Bear Moth Caterpillar, commonly found in southern Canada, Greenland and the Arctic. They survive the winter by freezing and producing a chemical that acts as an antifreeze. This state is called hibernation. In the spring, they thaw and emerge as moths. Then we look at the Monarch Butterfly on Pelee Island, ON. This is typically their last stop before launching a long journey to a warmer climate like Mexico. Do butterflies in the southern hemisphere have to migrate?
