Every May, the biggest and most exciting rez hockey tournament takes place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The “Freddy” or the Chief Thunderstick Invitational brings the top 40 Indigenous men’s and 16 women’s team to one place to battle for Rez hockey supremacy. This year, John is taking the helm of his home community’s team, the Kitigan-Zibi Bulls as they try and win the championship, but his trip is also about finding out more about the legacy of the man behind the tournament and what brings so many people together at this Indigenous hockey celebration.

In the Good Game series, former NHLer John Chabot, a native of Kitigan Zibi reserve in Quebec, travels the country to understand the place that hockey holds in the collective life of Canada’s Indigenous peoples.
