Hayley investigates Fernie, BC's Ghostrider legend - a horse and rider shadow that appears on Mount Hosmer at sunset. Leanna Gravelle, descendent of a Ktunaxa chief, says early prospector William Fernie jilted the chief’s daughter after they showed him the source of the coal she wore as a necklace. He claimed the chief then put a curse on the valley which caused frequent local catastrophes.

A mayor in 1964 requested the Kootenai tribe to conduct a curse lifting ceremony. Janice Alpine of the Ktunaxa Nation explains that the Ghostrider story is a settler’s legend. Ktunaxa legends feature only the animals who once ruled the world. Curses are not part of their tradition, but they obliged the townspeople, putting on a show that supposedly lifted the curse.
