Dragons are mythological serpent-like creatures that appear in every world culture, usually depicted flying and breathing fire. Indigenous dragon stories about powerful, dangerous creatures were told before the arrival of European, Marina Fisher at the Nickle Galleries in Calgary tells Hayley. In Europe the dragon was a spiritual symbol of evil and in Asia it was an emblem of luck.

Butch Dyck, Lekwungen elder, tells Hayley about a sea serpent power symbol in their Coast Salish longhouse. Rande Cooke, Kwakwaka’wakw multimedia artist, describes how young warriors could gain power from sisiutl, the double headed serpent. At the Tyrrell Museum Dr. Donal Henderson talks about the similarities of legendary dragons to reptilian or carnivorous dinosaurs. Doc concludes with the story “Mystical in the Mist”, an Indigenous serpent-like creature story.
