Fire and water are sacred elements for First Nations people. In Cape Breton Mi’kmaw youth are taking water survival training, a Bridge Watch course at Nova Scotia Community College. Kendal Jacobs, a Tsuut’ina Wilderness Survival Instructor in Alberta shows Drew the art of fire building and how to send smoke signals. Fire is used in their ceremonies, sweat lodge, sun dancing, and controlled burns were used as part of the buffalo hunt.
Drew travels to Rocky Mountain House to learn about traditional indigenous use of fire in forest management from Métis Dr. Amy Cardinal Christianson, a fire research scientist with the Canadian Forest Service. We need to learn from fire knowledge keepers about traditional uses of fire. Niagara Falls is a special place to Indigenous people. Anishinaabe Michelle-Elise Burnett is reigniting Indigenous stories - the role of Indigenous people during the War of 1812 in the Niagara region, and the tale of the Maid of the Mist.
