A new generation of Indigenous people is using the human body as a canvas. On the Tyendinaga Mowhawk Territory at an Indigenous gathering people are revitalizing traditional tattoo culture knowledge. The Indian Act’s late 1800’s potlach ban included tattooing, which led to the loss of these traditions. Dion Kaszas from the Salish nation Nlaka'pamuxm does hand poke tattooing, and an Inuit tattoo artist is a specialist in traditional northern women’s tattoos.
Another way Indigenous people identify themselves is through hundreds of distinctive hairstyles. In Niverville MB Drew gets his locks styled by Mitch McLeod of Cru Barber & Co. where they also create any traditional style a customer wants. Four Indigenous people tell us their philosophies for using their bodies as a canvas for art. Body art is changing how we are thinking about our lost past.
