1874: John A. MacDonald created the North-West Mounted Police to tame the wild western frontier and clear the way for a transcontinental railroad, securing Canada’s hope of continental nationhood. Their toughest opponents were not just American outlaws and whiskey traders who explited native peoples, but also the resistance of the land itself.
“The Great March” recreates this spectacular adventure, depicting the perils and hardships faced by the newly minted “Mounties”. Resplendent in their majestic red serge, the men are unprepared for what awaits them. They confront terrifying prairie storms, starvation, thirst, dysentery, malaria, death of their horses, and the constant pervasive fear of battles with the whiskey traders and the Indigenous peoples of the prairies. Based upon original diaries, journals and illustrations recorded by members of the expeditionary force of 1874.
