Healing is a collective effort, and the Oglala Lakota people of Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, know this all too well. Long faced with mental health crises and generational trauma, Kyle Mesteth and Stanley Brewer Jr. are working to bring back traditional practices and give youth healthy coping mechanisms, creating space for them to learn about their traditions, recognize their self-worth and flourish.
Kyle builds community through skateboarding and a multimedia space called Ground Control, giving kids a safe, creative outlet and modeling sobriety, confidence, and self‑expression. Stanley leads a horsemanship program that reconnects youth with Lakota traditions, teaching trust, patience, emotional regulation, and cultural pride. Together, they empower the next generation to grow strong, grounded, and hopeful, carrying forward the Lakota vision of the Seventh Generation.
