The Onyota’a:ka Nation people live in the settlement Oneida of the Thames near London, Ontario. They fled their traditional homeland in New York state early in the 19th century and they are working to revive their language (part of the Iroquoian group) which was lost through the residential school experience.
A local unlicensed radio station, “The Eagle”, helps preserve the Oneida language, and focuses on traditional music. The Tsi Niyukwaliho Learning Centre, an alternative school, provides total immersion in Oneida language and culture, using a holistic spiritual approach based on traditional Oneida teachings. Ray John, language specialist, says the language comes from the culture.
