In this episode we learn what motivates members of the Black Canadian community to archive Black history and shared from generation to generation. Activist Winston LaRose is a documentarian who, over 50 years, captured footage of many important Black community activists like Dudley Laws and Charles Roach, fighting for change. His material is now going to be maintained at the University of Toronto. Aaron Francis, curator for Vintage Black Canada, a photography archives, got started by posting his grandfather Roy Francis’s images online after his death. Klive Walker, co-curator of the exhibition ‘Rhythms and Resistance: Caribbean Music in Toronto’ which features artists like Lillian Allan’s legacy. Itah Sadu is a storyteller, author and owner of a Toronto bookstore and cultural centre called A Different Booklist and receives many archival items for preservation and sharing. Many more stories may be hidden in personal collections that could enrich our understanding of Black Canadian history.
