A Gulf Island BC First Nation helps understand the protection of our oceans and shorelines.

Penelakut Island is a nation that remains somewhat untouched so youth are still eating traditional foods like clams and oysters. It is an independent community that lives off of the ocean and is guided by a strong culture and vibrant local economy. Elders say “when the tide is down, the table is set.”  The people of Penelakut are trying to educate outside polluters on the dangers they are creating as these pollutants lurk closer and closer to their shores. They are concerned about tankers – their oil and gas spills, ballast water – all of which now threaten their food, medicine, cooking traditions and way of life.

From Kwassen Productions (Steve Sxwithul'txw) – Steve is an award winning filmmaker from the Penelakut Tribe located just off Vancouver Island.
