High precipitation and wind along BC’s west coast pose unique challenges for maintaining mold resistant homes. Remote Indigenous communities have poor access to building materials, construction capacity and funding, living with insufficient, inefficient and culturally inappropriate government sponsored prefab homes. Through innovative housing management the Nuxalk Nation in Bella Coola, BC, empowered their Nation by training their own people to design and build homes that reflect their culture and build local construction capacity, a successful model for other First Nations.
