Today we have an entire generation of experienced Indigenous filmmakers eager to carry on telling stories. In Nipissing First Nation, Drew meets with filmmaker Sara Cornthwaite who helps people share the teachings and stories they hold, both local and international. Next he heads to the Six Nations Reserve where filmmaker Jon Elliot is bringing untold stories to life. If he is telling stories of people not from his Mohawk nation, he seeks guidance to make sure that his production is respectful. He’s hoping to expand into Native pop culture and humour.
Award-winning Inuit photographer Katherine Takpannie from Iqaluit Nunavut lives in Ottawa and enjoys capturing images that celebrate Inuit excellence, beauty and Indigenous lives, as she reconnects with her culture, language and heritage. And in Winnipeg, an indigenous film hub, filmmaker Roger Boyer’s storytelling films are characterized by action and humour. He dreams of making an Indigenous martial arts action film. The world needs to see Indigenous people through a new lens.
