Indigenous artists draw audiences and fill galleries. In Montreal Drew meets with Kahnawà:ke Mohawk visual artist, Kaia’Tanoron Dumolin. Art is her medicine, and behind her seemingly fun pop art lies deep-seated messages. Chocolate is one of the mediums she uses to make an ironic statement. In the shadow of Toronto’s CN Tower Chippewa artist Jay Soule (aka Chippewar) has installed 1300 cast buffalo skulls for the Luminato Festival to shine light on the truth of history – the intentional slaughter of buffalo to starve Indigenous people. Alongside he displays his version of propaganda poster art, exposing 200 years of Canadian genocide.

In Calgary, Drew meets visual artist Blade Hart, of Nakota lineage. His pop art is driven by his rediscovery of his maternal Indigenous roots. It takes today’s culture and adds a twist. Last, in Winnipeg, Drew visits Niigan Sinclair’s collection of Indigenous comics. Indigenous people historically told stories through graphics. ‘This Place; 150 Years Retold’, a compilation of comic book art was published for Canada's 150th anniversary, focusing on the often-overlooked Indigenous stories. Pop art pushes the boundaries making us think more deeply while having fun.
