399 follows the life of the most famous bear in the world, Grizzly #399, as she attempts to raise an unusually large litter of four cubs to adulthood. Amidst a warming climate, human encroachment, and the looming threat of losing protected status under the Endangered Species Act, a mother bear makes increasingly unexpected — and consequential — choices to protect her family.
NOTE: On Tuesday October 22, 2024 Grizzly 399 was struck and killed by a vehicle on the roadside south of Jackson, WY. At 28 years old, she was the oldest known reproducing female grizzly in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and a beloved icon who helped raise awareness for grizzly conservation.
As a storyteller drawn to emotional and political subtleties, I am captivated by this grizzly bearbecause of the intense feelings she inspires in our species. In exploring 399’s life, I aim to fostera respect for her as a mother bear surviving in a rapidly changing and complex landscape. Byengaging with 399’s resilience, we are invited to examine our own. - Elizabeth Leiter, producer and director
