Filmmaker André-Line Beauparlant’s fascinating documentary ‘Pinocchio’ probes the story of her con artist brother who has a “talent” for spinning tales.  Eric is working his way around the world crewing on ships, until he gets arrested in Brazil, awaiting deportation to Canada. Between calls to the embassy, unexpected meddling of a stranger seeking to incriminate him and breaking the news to distraught parents, Éric’s sister, filmmaker André-Line Beauparlant, gradually pierces the mystery surrounding her imaginative brother, who has mastered the art of deception as the ultimate way of life. She peels some layers of the onion but never gets to the heart of the mystery that is her brother. In the end, there’s no ending. Beauparlant doesn’t draw any conclusions, though the sub-text is that maybe we all lie a little to get by.
