Beyond Sight examines the perspectives of the Inuit way of life, both visible and imaginary, as the Northwest Passage is opening to more maritime navigation. Art works and traditional stories transmit the spirit of the Arctic, and the whispering voice of Nuliajuk or Sedna, the powerful spirit of the sea and mother of all peoples on earth, tells her immortal story and the story of changing times.

Inuit denizens such as Piita Irniq and Allen Niptanatiak and Great North specialists describe the importance of shamans, the impact of the forced shift from nomadic to village lifestyles, the loss of culture through residential schools, and the potential of ecotourism and resource development.

Images of the iconic Inuit landscape are interspersed with those of Inuit artworks and overlaid with special artistic effects, highlighting fears about environmental change and aspirations to a better future. The Canadian fight for international recognition of its sovereignty in the lands, waters and resources of the north – 40% of our territory – is crucial.

Filmmaker and educator, Louise Lamarre, uses her skills as an intra-camera special effects artist to promote rejuvenation of Inuit culture and to explore the impact of climate change on Canadian Arctic sovereignty.
