A proud, veteran mechanic who owns a small-town auto repair shop, hires a quiet young man to be her apprentice. When the mechanic is shown evidence by her trusted employee that the apprentice is hiding something, she refuses to believe that she could have made a mistake. Then a sudden turn of events creates doubt and the mechanic makes an even bigger mistake that forces her to choose between serving her own pride or helping the young man. "Sal’s Auto" exposes how shame and pride causes some of us to keep secrets and others to miss subtle cries for help.
The program is an excellent discussion starter that shows how people struggle with their mental health and its impact on their professional lives. The story portrays a familiar situation: What if an employee feels they cannot disclose their mental illness to their employer for fear of discrimination? Their efforts to conceal the illness can lead to complications and misunderstanding. For employers, how does one recognize the signs of an employee who needs help but is not willing to disclose. Mental health stigma - whether self-imposed or imposed by others, prevents many people from seeking help.
