In the early 1970’s, the massive James Bay Hydroelectric Project came to this territory, a time when there was no recognition of aboriginal rights in Canada. The project would have a huge impact on their way of life. Faced with the threat, Cree leaders worked with the law to retain their identity and signed the James Bay Northern Quebec Agreement (Cree Quebec Governance Agreement) in 2012, a modern-day treaty.
